ANDRÉS VICENTE GÓMEZ

Andrés Vicente Gómez, one of Spain’s most prolific and Europe’s most highly regarded producers, winner of an Oscar® for Fernando Trueba’s “Belle Epoque”, was honoured at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival as one of the world’s most important film industry professionals.

In addition to awards won at the Venice, Berlin, Montreal and San Sebastian Film Festivals, his annual presence at the Goyas, Spain’s Academy Awards, makes him the Spanish producer with the most national and international awards. Several of Spain’s top grossing films have been produced by Gómez who has worked with virtually every Spanish director of renown over the past 35 years including Fernando Trueba, Pedro Almodóvar, Carlos Saura, Bigas Luna, Vicente Aranda, Gonzalo Suárez, Pilar Miró and Alex de la Iglesia.

ISI DISI, Love Like a Beast”, starring Spain’s comedy finest Santiago Segura and Florentino Fernández, became the second biggest local hit in 2004, with a box office take of over 7 Million Euros. Responding to this success the sequel, “ISI/DISI, High Voltage”, is currently in post-production. Also in post-production is “Teresa, the Body of Christ”, a film about the life of Saint Teresa of Avila, founder of the reformed Discalced Carmelites, considered a rebel, a madwoman, a leader and finally named a saint. The Film stars Paz Vega, Geraldine Chaplin and Leonor Watling with the Oscar® winner Eiko Ishioka in charge of the costumes.

Gómez’s 2006 slate includes the Italian-Austrian co-production “IO, Don Giovanni”, a fascinating trip through the world of the opera “Don Giovanni”, guided by its creators: the genius Wolfang Amadeus Mozart and his librettist, the libertine Lorenzo Da Ponte, disciple of Casanova. The film will be directed by three-time Cannes Golden Palm winner, Carlos Saura. Gómez and the multi-talented Menno Meyjes (screenwriter of “The Color Purple”, director of “Max”) are teaming up for “Manolete” which tells the story of the amazing young bullfighter who innovated the art during Spain’s post-civil war period. The film stars Oscar® winner Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”, “King Kong”) and Penélope Cruz.

As a distributor since the early 70’s Andrés Vicente Gómez has been bringing to Spanish audiences an eclectic selection of international cinema from classic directors such as Buster Keaton, Charles Chaplin, Jean-Pierre Melville or Akira Kurosawa. In addition, he has distributed the works of numerous auteur masters including Bernardo Bertolucci, Robert Bresson, Claude Chabrol, Peter Greenaway, Shohei Imamura, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Alain Resnais, François Truffaut and Bertrand Tavernier. He has also introduced Spain to the independent voices of Peter Bogdonavich, Hal Hartley, Neil Jordan, Paul Morrissey, Tim Robbins and Alan Rudolph. In 2005, Gómez brought to Spanish shores the critically acclaimed feature “Old Boy”, by Korean Park Chanwook, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the last Cannes Film Festival, and taking the Best Film and Critic Awards at Sitges.

In addition to his extensive production and distribution activities, Gómez is Chairman of The Media Business School, one of the European Union’s centres of excellence in training and development under the MEDIA Programme. He is a founding member of the distinguished Paris-based think tank Le Club des Producteurs Européens and the European Film Academy. Since 1994, Gómez has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of America. In recent years he has actively served FIAPF (Federation Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films) as one of its European Vice-Presidents and in May 2003, Andrés Vicente Gómez was elected President of the organization.
