INFORMADOR.COM.MX. "La chispa de la vida" to be screened in Tribeca out of competition.

LA CHISPA DE LA VIDA EN TRIBECA.INFORMADOR.COM.MXNEW YORK, USA (08/MARCH/2012).- The Spanish film "La chispa de la vida" (The Spark of Life), directed by Álex de la Iglesia, is to be screened this year out of competition at New York's Tribeca Film Festival, organizers announced today.

The movie, with comedic actor José Mota and Salma Hayek and written by Randy Felman, tells the story of the unemployed Roberto who, while looking for a job has an accident that leaves him trapped in an excavation site.

Roberto, flat broke, decides to capitalize on his misfortune and turn it into a media event from which he hopes to make some money to support his family. The cast of this tragicomedy includes Juan Luis Galiardo and Antonio Tejero.

"The renowned director, Álex de la Iglesia, takes a unique step forward, combining dark comic satire with a moving story about love within a family," said Tribeca organizers in a statement.

"La chispa de la vida" will be screened out of competition as part of the "Spotlight" category along with 34 feature films -22 movies and 12 documentaries from Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, EU, France, Luxemburg, Poland, United Kingdom, Russia, Sweden and Thailand.

Among these, the Brazilian film "Xingú," directed by Cao Hamburger stands out. "Xingú" tells the story of an expedition made 50 years ago by the Villas Boas Brothers, who fought for the creation of a natural park in the Xingú River, a tributary of the Amazon River.

"Xingú" was produced by well-known Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles, who won an Oscar for best director for "Ciudad de Dios" in 2004.

A Spanish and three Latin American films (Argentina, Cuba and Mexico), are in the running for the Best Narrative in the Festival, which takes place in New York on April 18 and 19.

The Tribeca Film Festival was founded in 2002 by actor Robert De Niro, amongst others, in a response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center as a way of recovering the vitality of the Tribeca neighborhood in Lower Manhattan.
